How You Can Help:

Patient Care

Adopt-A-Doc. Help underwrite a pediatric resident working in one of the nine inner ring communities of New Haven. Under this innovative program, pediatric residents volunteer for service in the homes, churches, and schools of the inner city. Adopt-A-Doc seeks to demystify the doctor-patient relationship by bringing the doctor to the community. This unique program depends on donations from individuals and local foundations to sustain its mission.

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Children. Minimally invasive surgery involves smaller scars, less pain, shorter recovery times, and outcomes that equal or surpass those of more invasive procedures. Dr. Larry Moss and his colleagues in the Section of Pediatric Surgery have pioneered these techniques for children suffering from appendicitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, or a host of other illnesses. We invite you to join us in bringing this state-of-the art technology to the tiniest patients.

Pain and Sedation Services for Children. Minimizing pain and discomfort connected with hospitalization is a prime goal of parents and pediatricians alike. Pediatric anesthesiologists in the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital currently direct a pain service that provides 24/7 coverage for the evaluation and treatment of pain in children. Together with colleagues in anesthesiology, intensive care specialists from the Department of Pediatrics provide coverage for procedural sedation in both the in-patient and out-patient settings. Palliative care (reducing the severity of symptoms or alleviating symptoms) eases the suffering of terminally ill children approaching the end of life. Services for pain, sedation, and palliative care are not reimbursed by most insurers; your generous donations enable us to put children's needs first.

Pediatric Procedure Suite. Children undergoing scoping procedures of the esophagus, colon, or trachea benefit from a private procedure suite where extra time can be spent to prepare the patient. Doctors specially trained in caring for children's smaller and more delicate organs will use this suite to treat a variety of ailments in child-centered surroundings.

Research

The Department of Pediatrics has a tradition of ground-breaking advances in research with a mission to develop superlative physician-scientists, dedicated to finding the causes and cures of childhood illness. The Department's national ranking in research reflects not only the achievements of our established scientists, who win support from the National Institutes of Health and private foundations, but also our commitment to the development of the next generation of pediatric investigators. Help us to support the young investigators who place the future of pediatric research within our grasp.

Education

The educational mission of the Department of Pediatrics encompasses high school and college students, medical students, residents, and fellows. Each of these distinct populations requires unique educational approaches developed to capitalize on the inspirational relationship between student and teacher. High school students participate in our simulated patient program. College students have the opportunity to work in research laboratories throughout the Department. Medical students, residents, and fellows benefit from the excitement of endowed lectures in international health, ethics, infectious diseases, immunology, and community pediatrics. Endowing a lectureship or a summer research fellowship commemorates a loved one in perpetuity.
